Away and Away

He was gently brushing her hair whilst inhaling the sweet scent that radiated off her. She was laying motionless except for the slow breathing rhythm from her chest. He was building a future with her in his head and his lips broke into a smile. His right hand wandered around her body, the warmth of her skin attracted his heartbeat to dance according to hers. It urged him to lean in to kiss her between the forehead. She lazily opened her eyes with a widening smile as if she was awoken from a sensational dream. Their eyes met and he was convinced she was inviting him to see her world through her very eyes. He did.

The very vision of her suddenly broke into a million pieces and he could not feel his legs. He immediately looked around the room and felt a sudden panic growing in his chest. The room grew dimmer and dimmer by the second and objects broke into a swirl. His pulse quickened and he realized he could not feel his legs as he was being sucked into a black hole. He screamed in vain and against his will, he was being dragged deeper into the hole and the vision of her grew into a blur before his eyes.

He jolted awake at that very instant. He found himself in pools of sweat and frustration. He reached for his watch to see that it was only 4.15am which equated to only half an hour of sleep for that week. He tucked his knees closer to him and rested his pounding head on them. He pulled his hair back with both hands and concentrated on inhaling deep breaths. He soon drifted away.

He was walking along a street, a busy street with cafes and pubs tucked along the sides of the walkway. It was a chilly night and he soon felt the regret to opt for a walk at that time of the night. He pressed on anyway to wander the street and adjusted his coat to conceal his body heat in. He saw small flickering lights ahead of him originating from a restaurant. He decided to head there. As he inched closer, he could hear distant laughters and he immediately felt warmth overcoming the cold wind.

He peered in from the window. It was a cozy eating joint that attracts the crowds of families, groups of close friends and intimate couples. He saw their smiling expressions, comfort, trust, their natural and willing presences and love. At that moment, he spotted her sitting with a bunch. He has never seen them before but he was sure it was her. He watched from a distant, through a window. She looked beautiful as ever, dancing merrily with conversations and laughter, she looked free and happy.

His gaze must have alerted her. She looked over to him. Their eyes met. He was looking at her through a window, from a distant, from the outside, worlds apart. He felt an immense force pushing him backwards and he again screamed as he struggled to resist it. The distant between them started to stretch to miles away and he could not do anything to reverse it. He saw her and only a glimpse of her world through a minimizing window.
